Self Care Tips to Survive the Holidays

Between last-minute shopping, a calendar filled with social events, entertaining, and the inevitable over indulging, the holidays can certainly be a stressful time of year. Even though it's tempting to put self-care on the back burner when our plates are seemingly overflowing, it's important to make sure we fill our own cups first so we can show up as our best selves during festive season.

Here are some tried-and-true tips to get through all the hustle and bustle without burning out...

1. CALM YOUR MIND

Study after study proves the positive benefits of meditation and it's something that can be done in as little as a few minutes a day! Our recommendation is to implement your meditation practice first thing in the morning before you start your day.

*Diana's recommendation:The Calm App (Free plan or$69.99/yr)
*Janet's recommendation: Insight Timer App (Free plan or $59.99/yr)

2. DO THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FIRST

There's a lot to be said for 'eating the frog'. Prioritizing what's most important and getting it done before anything else can set your entire day up for success. Resist the urge to tick smaller, less important tasks off your to-do list first and instead face what's really crucial and cross that baby right off!

*Janet's recommendation: Try a project management tool like Trello (plans range from free to $17.50/month)

3. SKINCARE FOR A LITTLE GLOW

A self-care list would be incomplete without the mention of some essential skincare to get that glow going. Apply a mask before a night out for a fresh-faced look and don't forget a hydrating moisturizer to combat dry skin.

*Diana's recommendation:Kora Organics Turmeric Brightening & Exfoliating Mask (3.38 oz $50)
*Janet's recommendation: Ursa Major Golden Hour Recovery Cream (1.57 oz $52)

4. DON'T SKIP YOUR WORKOUT

No matter what your workout of choice, it's so important to not let this habit slip during the holidays! Whether you prefer walking, jogging, yoga, or a strength-training session at the gym, keeping a habit of whatever gets you moving is imperative to maintain good mental health during life's busy times.

*Diana's recommendation:I love these online courses from Daily OM ($19-$55 per course) in addition to strength-training sessions at the gym!

*Janet's recommendation:A brisk walk outside does the trick! If you're short on time you can break it up into two15-minute blocks.

5. LET THERE BE LIGHT!

Getting some sunlight first thing in the morning is scientifically proven to increase energy levels throughout the day and improve overall wellbeing. Getting 10-15 minutes of natural light upon waking up increases serotonin levels and even helps us sleep better at night. If you aren't able to get outside, opt for a sunlight simulation lamp.

*Diana's recommendation:This video from Andrew Huberman gives an in-depth look at the importance of getting some natural light in the morning.

*Janet's recommendation: Verilux® Happylight® Alba Sunlight Lamp ($49.99)

We hope you enjoyed this list and that you prioritize some nourishing 'you time' this holiday season!

Diana & Janet
